The Woman Treated Like Furniture: A Silent Shakti in Every Indian Home

She’s everywhere, but nowhere. In her own home, she’s treated like furniture—expected to be present, useful, and silent. She speaks, she’s dismissed. She rests, she’s questioned. Her presence is taken for granted. Her exhaustion is invisible.

At work, she’s no different. Despite her qualifications, she’s seen as a liability. “Will she manage home and office?” they whisper. But no one asks how much she already holds together—quietly, completely.

She is the daughter who suppresses her voice for family peace. The wife who adjusts to avoid conflict. The mother who puts herself last. The girlfriend who understands too much. In every role, she’s told to give, serve, and not ask for much in return.

She’s the substitute for everyone—cook, cleaner, driver, therapist, nurse, teacher, planner, event manager, peacemaker. She fills every gap, becomes everyone’s backup—but no one thinks she may break.

And yet, she continues. Balancing bills and birthdays. Comforting others while swallowing her pain. Fighting at all fronts—office deadlines, emotional labor, societal judgment—with no applause, no space to fall apart.

She doesn’t wear a cape. She wears tired eyes and silent strength. She is Shakti—power in motion—but this power remains unacknowledged. Not divine. Just demanded.

It’s time we see her, not as furniture, not as fragile, not as forever-available, but as a full human. She needs support, not just expectations. Recognition, not just reliance.

To every woman feeling unseen, you are not alone. You are not weak. You are not invisible. You are the force holding it all, and it’s time we say: We see you.
